Statement from EIS Superintendent, Jon Ballard

These are challenging times in our nation, our state and our community. The killings of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and Breonna Taylor in our own back yard make it painfully obvious of the racial injustice that exists in our world. Racism has no place in our society and certainly not in our schools. However, it exists. It’s real. And, it’s painful.

As a school district, we must do everything we can to address the issue head on.  The worst thing we can do is pretend that it doesn’t exist. ”Not here”, we could say. Or, “we’re not like that”. But, the fact is, it does exist on varying levels and must be addressed.

So, how do we do that?  We do that by listening.  By listening and reflecting on ourselves and our behaviors with a conscious effort to do better.  In the Elizabethtown Independent School District, we initiated this process in the spring of 2019.  With input from a series of focus groups including educators, community leaders, parents and students, the Elizabethtown Independent School District embarked on a mission to create a healthy foundation of equity and inclusion in our school district.  We believe that education is a right to which all human beings deserve equal access.  Born from this healthy dialogue was the Elizabethtown Independent Schools Equity Plan (attached).
