It is hard to believe I am moving into my fourth year as the principal at Helmwood Heights Elementary School after 17 years of teaching in the classroom at Helmwood. Time sure flies when you are having fun!!! I am looking forward to the 20/21 school year and all that it may bring. Helmwood is a great place for students with teachers that focus on building meaningful relationships with students and families and providing high-quality instruction for students. Our Culture of Learning initiative using the 7 Habits of Happy Kids as well as a positive Growth Mindset approach puts students in the driver's seat and helps them be more responsible and actively involved in their learning, growth, goal-setting and progress. We aim to educate the whole child not only academically but also socially, emotionally and behaviorally preparing them for life and school beyond their elementary years. Along with our Culture of Learning Program, each student has a Growth and Leadership Binder to set goals and monitor progress, log leadership and service involvement, showcase accomplishments, etc. This "Scholar Scrapbook" if you will, becomes the focus of our Student-Led Conferences in the fall and spring each year where students speak and present on their behalf to their families about their growth, progress and goals. It is amazing to see how our students rise to the occasion and flourish and prosper under this initiative.
We are also very excited that we will have 10 teachers by this fall trained in Orton Gillingham phonics instruction, we operate each day under a small group station teaching model in core reading and math, we have collaborative schoolwide instructional action plans in each content area, we implemented Minds in Motion in our gym this past year, we have a rising new Vex Robotics team and a successful Academic Team, and we are growing exponentially in our use of technology in instruction and will be one-to-one with Chromebooks this fall!!
I am blessed to lead in a place with such high-quality staff members, supportive parents and hardworking children. I can't wait to continue on this journey with Helmwood as I know the sky is the limit for us and I can't wait to see what the future holds. We always welcome new students and families and want to maintain an open-door policy and collaborative relationship with our community, other educators, current and potential students and their families. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
